This issue of the Spirit of Ananda Newsletter is a reminder for Ananda's Quit Smoking Retreat scheduled for May 2014, introduces Ananda’s Diabetes and Cholesterol Management Retreat scheduled for June 2014 and also provides Yoga practices, Aromatherapy and Ayurveda tips which can be beneficial in controlling your cholesterol and sugar level.

Ananda’s Quit Smoking Retreat will be conducted by Dr.Shijoe Matthew- Ananda's Ayurvedic Doctor from May 1st to May 14th 2014. It can be booked both as a 7 night or a 14 night retreat.

Diabetes and Cholesterol Management Retreat

Diabetes and cholesterol come together under the broad category of metabolic syndrome. The type 2 diabetes, which is not genetic and high cholesterol often is caused exclusively by dietary and lifestyle incompatibilities. It is very well known that the management of these two through medications can be just superficial and may still cause further complications if the cause is not taken care of.

This retreat will be conducted by Ananda's Ayurvedic Doctor – Dr. Shijoe Matthew Anchery from June 1st to June 14th 2014. It can be booked for either 7 nights or for 14 nights.


Ananda’s approach to Diabetes and Cholesterol Management

Ayurveda says the major cause of these are lack of exercises and excess intake of food which is quality heavy (guru), heating (ushna) and oily (snigdha). These food items increase the tendency of the body towards Kapha and at the same time disturbs the Medo Dhatu or the fat tissue and Mootra leading to excessive and turbid urination.
The management in Ayurveda for these is with comprehensive attention to three aspects :

1) Ahara or food
2) Aushada or medication/treatments and
3) Vihara or exercise

While oral hypoglycemics and insulin can control the level of glucose in blood, it is the effect of diet and exercise which is deep and theraputic. At Ananda the focus will be developing a healthy diet pattern and activity which is not just low in sugar and fat, but helps to balance your Doshas.

The body will be cleansed through the age old Panchakarma procedures and the metabolism will be focused and corrected through specific treatments like Tarka Kaya Seka which is a bath using medicated buttermilk. The complications that may have started manifesting due to these imbalances will also be managed using specific Ayurvedic treatments which will be individually planned after the consultation with the doctor on the day of arrival.

Dhanurasana or “Bow Pose” is an excellent practice for diabetes and cholesterol management.


Lie down on the stomach. Place the chin on the floor. Bend the knees and clasp the big toe with the thumb touching the sole of the foot. This is the starting position of the practice. To reach the final position , inhale in the starting position retain the breath inside and then lift head, chest, upper abdomen and thighs off the floor and pull the toes towards the back of the head. Please keep the elbow upwards and to the front. In the final position whole of the body balances on the navel and the head is tilted back. Try to keep the feet and the knees together throughout the practice. Hold the final position either with the internal retention of the breath or breathe slowly and deeply if you can stay there a little longer. Then, with one slow exhalation lower the body and come back in the prone position and relax the body.


Bow pose is an advanced pose and should not be performed by people with weak heart, high blood pressure, hernia, peptic ulcer.


This is one of the classical postures in Hatha Yoga. In this practice entire digestive system gets very strong massaging effects. This is also used in yoga therapy to realign the spine.

Signature Wellness Experience

Ananda’s signature treatment – Tibetan Massage is extremely effective in controlling Palpitation and Hypertension which is very common in Diabetes.

Tibetan healing therapies are based around purification of the 5 senses and restoring balance to five elements. The combination of essential oils used are to balance disorders of bones, muscle, nerves, internal organs, gallbladder and intestines, ears and eyes.

Tibetan massage duration of 75 minutes focuses on lymphatic massage, acupressure and meridian massage with poultices, starting with the back, backs of the legs, front of the legs chest and finishing with head massage.

Massage of meridians using Himalayan herb and salt poultices is performed using hot salt poultices over the meridians using Himalayan salt, cardamoms, lavender and Jatamansi to totally restore the nervous system and stimulate the free flow of energy in the body.

Jatamansi herb has the power to promote awareness and calm the mind. It is a very useful herb for palpitation, tension, headaches, and restlessness and is used for promoting awareness and strengthening the mind. It aids in balancing the body of all three Ayurvedic doshas. This herb's sedative properties increase awareness, as opposed to medication like valerian that dulls the mind.

There are several herbs which are found to be very effective in treating diabetes and lowering blood sugar level. The greatest advantage of these herbs is that they have no side effects. Given below is a list of some of the most effective diabetes treatment herbs which will be included in your diet during Ananda Diabetes and Cholesterol Management retreat.

- Bitter Gourd (Momordica charantia)
- Bael (Aegle marmelos)
- Gurmar Leaves (Gymnema sylvestrae)
- Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum)

In this issue of Diabetes and Cholesterol Management Chef Narendra Sharma and his team present a signature recipe for Homemade Corn filled Multigrain Ravioli, Beetroot Carpaccio, Mango and Mint salsa


Amount Measure Ingredient
250 grams Multi-grain flour
4 no Egg white

For Filling
100 grams Sweet corn
10 grams Garlic
10 grams Parsley - finely chopped
10 grams Salt
10 milliliters Olive oil

For Salsa
100 grams Mango --diced small
10 grams Mint -- finely chopped
5 grams Salt
10 milliliters Extra virgin olive oil
10 milliliters Vinegar

For Carpaccio
100 grams Beetroot

Preparation Method -

For Ravioli and Stuffing
- Knead hard dough with flour and eggs.
- Make small balls and roll into thin sheets. (1-2 mm appx.)
- Cut 8 squares of 2.5" X 2.5"
- For stuffing, heat oil in a pan and sauté garlic.
- Add corns and seasoning.
- Now place the stuffing in the centre of a square sheet and cover with the second sheet.
- Press all sides of the pasta to seal, give marks with a fork.
- Blanche the ravioli, keep aside.

- Mix all the ingredients and season.

- Boil beets and remove skin, slice thin.
- Place the sliced beets overlapping each other on the plate.
- Now plate the blanched Ravioli over Beetroot.
- Top it up with mango salsa and garnish with a basil sprig.
