This issue of the Spirit of Ananda Newsletter introduces Ananda's retreat for Women’s Health to be held in March 2014 and also provides Yoga practices, Aromatherapy and Ayurveda tips for various stages of women’s health. Women's life stages are based on the reproductive cycle, beginning with menstruation, pre-conception, pregnancy, post natal and ending with menopause. Every stage requires a different approach in assessment, lifestyle, activity and diet, preventive and curative experiences.

ANANDA'S APPROACH TO Women’s Health

Ananda’s signature wellness programs are both preventive and curative in nature for specific ailments as well as for chronic health issues. Nowhere is this more evident than in its approach towards Women’s Health. The focus is on using the building blocks of Ananda’s wellness programs with a combination of Aromatherapy’s holistic effects for each stage of womanhood. Menopause and Yoga
During menopause, fluctuating hormones such as estrogen and progesterone levels can trigger a number of uncomfortable symptoms. Among the most common are hot flashes, anxiety and irritability, insomnia, fatigue, depression and mood swings, memory lapses, and an erratic menstrual cycle.

A holistic programme of Yogic practices can help restablize the balance. A series of inverted asanas such as Setubandhasana (Bridge pose), Shoulder stand etc harmonize the functioning of hypothalamus which later on can help balancing the hormones. Backward bending poses like Cobra, Camel and Snake are excellent practices to overcome depression whereas Pawanmuktasana series III is an excellent set of yogic exercises to tone and revitalize the pelvic glands, organs and muscles. In yogic mudras and bandhas (Energy locks) Aswini Mudra, Sahjoli Mudra, and Mula Bandha are recommended for menopause. These mudras and bandhas tone coccygeal plexus and reproductive glands. And meditation techniques such as Yoga Nidra (Psychic/yogic sleep), Ajapa Japa (Psychic repetition of Mantra with Breath) and Antar Mouna (Technique of thought management) help to control mood swings, insomnia, anxiety and depression.

Although various forms of alternative healing practices offer solutions to many women’s health issues, Aromatherapy using pure essential oils offers unique advantages for women. Ananda’s Aromatherapy uses Essential Oils like Roman Chamomile, Rose, Geranium, Clary Sage and Lavender, a light lower back and stomach massage using essential oils assists their absorption into the body whilst relaxing the muscles, enabling the blood and lymph to flow more freely and soothe the mind. The blend would be applied twice a day over lower abdomen and lower back using deep circular movements. Also, experience full body Ananda Aromatherapy massages using upward strokes and a hot water bottle to accelerate absorption and relieve pain.

Ananda also recommends the following for onsite and home applications.

Dry & Itchy Skin: Base cream, 15 drops Rose Otto, 10 drops Frankincense. Aplly as required.
Hot Flushes: 50gms Aloe Vera Gel, 15 drops Cypress, 10 drops Lemongrass. Apply as required.
Aching Joints: Massage with 100ml massage oil base, 15 drops Black Pepper, 15 drops Ginger, 10 drops Cardamom. Apply as required.
Mood Swings: Aromatherapy Burner with 3 drops Mogra or Rose Otto, 3 drops Lavender. Burn incense as required.

Many women experience very irregular and heavy menstrual cycles. Natural and holistic treatments such as herbal and home remedies offer a gentler alternative to promoting normal cycles. To alleviate hormonal imbalances Ananda recommends a highly effective home remedy that one can follow:

Mix 8 grams of black sesame seed with 4 grams cow’s ghee (clarified butter), 4 grams jaggery and 2 grams dry ginger and 2 grams black pepper together and consume early morning (on an empty stomach) for 21 days starting from first day of menstrual cycle. This can be repeated for 3-5 cycles.
 

Ananda’s healthy cuisine is based on Ayurvedic principles and is customized as per the dosha (body type) of each of our guests. In this issue on Women’s Health, Executive Chef Narendra Sharma and his team present a signature recipe high in nutritional values and a complete meal in itself.

Homemade corn filled multigrain ravioli, Beetroot Carpaccio, Mango and Mint Salsa
 

Serving Size: 4

For RAVIOLI:
250 - grams multi-grain flour
2 - pieces egg

For Filling
100 - grams sweet corn
10 - grams garlic
10 - grams parsley -- finely chopped
10 - grams salt
20 - milliliters oil

For Salsa
100 - grams mango -- diced small
10 - grams mint -- finely chopped
5 - grams salt
20 - milliliters extra virgin olive oil
10 - milliliters vinegar

For Carpaccio
100 - grams beetroot

Method:
For RAVIOLI and Stuffing
1. Knead hard dough with flour and eggs.
2. Make small balls and roll into thin sheets. (1-2 mm approximately)
3. Cut 8 squares of 2.5" X 2.5"
4. For stuffing, heat oil in a pan and sauté garlic.
5. Add corns and seasoning.
6. Now place the stuffing in the centre of a square sheet and cover with the second sheet.
7. Press all sides of the pasta to seal, give marks with a fork.
8. Blanche the ravioli, keep aside.

For SALSA:
1. Mix all the ingredients and season.

For CARPACCIO:
1. Boil beets and remove skin, slice thin.
2. Place the sliced beets overlapping each other on the plate.
3. Now plate the blanched ravioli over beetroot.
4. Top it up with mango salsa and garnish with a basil sprig
