This issue of the Spirit of Ananda Newsletter is a reminder for Ananda’s Management of Asthma & Breathing Disorders Retreat scheduled for August 2014, introduces Ananda’s Living with Arthritis scheduled for October 2014 and also provides Yoga practices, Aromatherapy and Ayurveda tips which can be beneficial in managing arthritis.

Ananda’s Management of Asthma and Breathing Disorder Retreat will be conducted by Sushant Pandey- Ananda's Yoga Guru from August 1st to August 15th 2014. It can be booked both as a 7 night or a 14 night retreat.

Living with Arthritis Retreat

According to Ayurveda, Arthritis is caused by impaired digestion, due to improper dietary habits and a sedentary lifestyle, as well as an aggravated Vata Dosha (Ayurvedic term representing Air). Impaired digestion and irregular bowel movements lead to accumulation of toxins (ama) in the body. This ama, along with the aggravated Vata, gets stored in various joints and leads to stiffness or inflammation and pain.

The Ayurvedic treatment of Arthritis is focused on uprooting the disease in its entirety and providing a long-term solution, unlike modern medicine, which only works on suppressing the symptoms. In Ayurveda, every patient is recommended a personalized treatment plan, which consists of diet and lifestyle advice.

This retreat will be conducted by Ananda's Ayurvedic Doctor – Dr. Shijoe Matthew from October 1st – 15, 2014. It can be booked for either 7 nights or for 14 nights.


Ananda’s approach to Arthritis

Early diagnosis is the biggest key to cracking this chronic disease. The right treatment and lifestyle advice can decrease pain, protect joints and delay the onset of more serious disability. In fact, in some cases, early diagnosis can even alter the progression of the disease.

Most people with arthritis may experience pain and some stiffness or swelling in their joints in the early stages. Other than that, they can continue leading a normal life. However, others may find that the pain and loss of mobility brought on by arthritis leads to a less independent lifestyle.

This is why Ayurveda’s emphasis on treating the root cause of Arthritis with customized treatment for each individual goes a long way in facilitating long-term relief for the patient. Living in accordance with natural principles is the only means of achieving holistic health and keeping diseases at bay. Simple things like maintaining proper digestion by eating the right foods, lubricating your joints through massages, and exercising daily can help prevent the onset of this problem.

Here are some Ayurvedic tips for Managing Arthritis:

Sea water has been found effective in relieving pain and stiffness of the affected joints. The iodine content of sea water not only helps to balance the pH of the body but also positively influences the thyroid functioning. Thus bathing in sea water can be recommended for patients suffering from arthritis.

Drinking water stored in copper containers proves to be beneficial for arthritis patients as the minerals strengthen the skeletal and muscular system.

Sesame seeds soaked in water- Drink the seeds along with the water in the morning. This remedy will make your joint pains infrequent


Choornaswedna is also known as bundle massage. This relieves neurological disorders, rheumatism, arthritis and sports injuries. Following a full body massage with dosha specific oils, therapeutic sweating is induced by the application of warmed herbal poultices. This treatment is done for 60 minutes on the full body.

Arthritis is the inflammation of synovial joints of the body and is a degenerative disorder. The condition is characterized by swelling, redness, heat and pain in the affected joints. In the yogic system arthritis is considered as the malfunction of prana and metabolic processes. Yoga offers practices to arrest the development of arthritis and relieve the pain and symptoms through various techniques.

Cat Stretch Pose

Start on your hands and knees in a "tabletop" position. Make sure your knees are set directly below your hips and your wrists, elbows and shoulders are in line and perpendicular to the floor. Center your head in a neutral position, eyes looking at the floor.

As you exhale, round your spine toward the ceiling, making sure to keep your shoulders and knees in position. Release your head toward the floor, but don't force your chin to your chest. Inhale, coming back to neutral "tabletop" position on your hands and knees.

Amount Measure Ingredient
02 no Hlibut steak (40 gram each)
02 no spinach leaves (blanched and kept)
5 gm mango puree
5 gm carrot relish
5 gm cherry tomato emulsion
2 gm poaching liquor
2 gm salt and pepper

Amount Measure Ingredient

5 gm cherry tomato emulsion
2 gm poaching liquor
2 gm salt and pepper

Carrot Relish
100 gm carrot (julienne)
50 ml orange juice
200 ml stock
10 ml vinegar
2 no star anise
2 no cinnamon stick
80 gm sugar
2 gm salt and pepper

Poaching Liquor
500 ml fish stock
10 gm orange rind
50 ml orange juice
1 no bay leaf
2 no pepper corns
2 no cloves
2 gm salt and pepper

For Poaching Liquor
Add fish stock in a pan. Put it on a flame and add all the ingredients.
Prepare fish stock by boiling together all ingredients.

For Carrot relish
Add carrot juliennes in a saucepan, add orange juice and stock.
Add star anise, cinnamon stick. Vinegar and sugar.
Check the seasoning; let it cook on a slow flame.
All the liquid will be absorbed by the carrot. Check for doneness.
Keep it aside for cooling.

For Cherry tomato Emulsion
Sauté onion and garlic in a pan till its light golden, then add stock and little butter.
When it starts to form an emulsion add cherry tomato and torn basil leaves.
Serve hot on top of any dish.

Preparation Method:
Poach the halibut in the poaching liquor.
Wrap it in the blanched spinach leaf.
Serve warm with carrot relish, cherry tomato emulsion.
