This issue of the Spirit of Ananda Newsletter is a reminder for Ananda’s Diabetes and Cholesterol Management Retreat scheduled for June 2014, introduces Ananda’s Management of Asthma and Breathing Disorders scheduled for August 2014 and also provides Yoga practices, Aromatherapy and Ayurveda tips which can be beneficial in managing breathing disorders.

Ananda’s Diabetes and Cholesterol Management Reterat will be conducted by Dr.Shijoe Matthew- Ananda's Ayurvedic Doctor from June 1st to June 15th 2014. It can be booked both as a 7 night or a 14 night retreat.

Retreat for Management of Asthma and Breathing Disorders

Asthma - a most common respiratory disease affects the bronchial tubes, or airways, of the lungs making breathing difficult. It is characterized by recurrent spasms of the tubes of the lungs. Symptoms include frequent coughing-especially at night, shortness of breath, wheezing, chest tightness, pain, or pressure. Asthma attacks can be triggered by infections such as colds or the flu, exercise, cold weather, tobacco smoke, air pollution and allergens. Causes of asthma are many. At a psychological level, suppression of negative emotions such as anger, resentment and hatred is often a cause. It can rise at any age, but is especially common in children and adolescents.

This retreat will be conducted by Ananda's Yoga Guru – Dr. Sushant Pandey from August 1st to August 15th 2014. It can be booked for either 7 nights or for 14 nights.


Ananda’s approach to Management of Asthma and Breathing Disorder

Bronchial asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways and the most common distressing disease affecting 3-5% of the total population. Ayurveda, the great indigenous system of medicine of India, is a complete health science and deals with the preventive and curative aspects of many diseases. It refers to bronchial asthma as Tamaka Swasa and contributes several modalities of treatment for the same.

Consultations with the Ayurvedic doctor at Ananda shall help you understand which foods are the most obstructive for the respiratory system and which are the hardest to digest. Foods that are easily digested create nutrients that are then assimilated into the tissues to rebuild their strength, are recommended.

During your stay at Ananda you will also learn the basic principles of Ayurvedic cooking and Yogic Practices. Ananda cooking classes provide knowledge of how to prepare food in ways that create maximum nourishment for the body and that prevent incomplete digestion and clogged circulation. Yogic practices help in restoration of depleted and blocked Pranic energy. Asanas help to open up the chest and lungs which results into good movement of breath and energies. Also, Pranayama practices help in strengthening the entire nervous and cardio-respiratory systems and allow better control over the breath.

Kunjal Kriya is one of the six cleansing techniques in Hatha Yoga. It helps to cleanse the stomach and is effective for people suffering from asthma, indigestion and hyperacidity. It helps to throw out excess mucous from the body hence helpful for bronchitis, asthma, and other respiratory ailments. This technique also helps to release the pent up emotions from the thoracic region (Hrid) of body.

Prepare six glasses of Luke warm saline water. Stand near a sink or basin or even outside in a garden if weather is warm and pleasant. Now drink six glasses of water one after the other quickly until your stomach is filled up with water completely. Once you feel you can’t take even one more sip then lean forward over the sink, keeping upper body almost horizontal. Open the mouth and take the index and middle fingers into the mouth and try to regurgitate by rubbing the finger on the back of the tongue. Continue process until entire amount of water is expelled out of the stomach.

Practice Note
Throughout the technique, please keep the stomach relaxed and breathe harmoniously. After completing the process any form of food and fluid should be avoided for at least half an hour. Salt in the water helps to dissolve and throw excess mucus out of the body.

People who are suffering from hypertension, peptic ulcers and have a history of stroke and hernia should avoid the practice. Pregnant ladies must also avoid this practice.

Ayurvedic tips for Managing Asthma and Breathing Disorder

1) People suffering from asthma can benefit from drinking boiled cow’s milk with a pinch of turmeric, a few peppercorns, and small pieces of sliced ginger.

2) Add 1 tsp of honey in very hot water and sip slowly. Take this just before sleeping to remove phlegm from the throat.

3) In 1 cup of water soak 1 tspn of Fenugreek seeds overnight. Strain and Add 1 tspn of Ginger juice and 1 tspn of honey to this. This should be sipped, morning and evening.

Recipe By : Ananda in the Himalayas
Serving Size: 1

Amount Measure Ingredient
50 grams Risotto Rice
30 grams Saffron
10 grams Parmesan Cheese
10 grams Butter
05 grams Parsley
50 ml White Wine
25 grams Chopped Onion
10 grams Chopped Garlic

In a pan add Olive oil, add chopped Onion, sauté it and add White Wine.
Now add Risotto Rice, Vegetable and Saffron and stock, cook it 15 minutes.
Finish with a little Butter and Parmesan, garnish with Parsley
Serve hot.
