This issue of our Spirit of Ananda Newsletter introduces Ananda's insomnia retreat and also aims to start you on a path toward healthy sleep. Sleep deprivation is a common problem today. Up to 40% of adults report at least occasional difficulty sleeping; chronic insomnia affects about 10-15% of adults.

Ananda announces its new Retreat for Insomnia & Sleep Disorder Management.
This retreat run by Ananda's Ayurveda, Yoga and Aromatherapy experts will be conducted from December 1st to December 15th, 2013.

Keep lying on your back, put a pillow under your head for comfort if need be, because it's possible that you may well fall asleep before the Yoga Nidra routine is completely through.

  • Breathing evenly, slowly let your consciousness shift through your head, letting go of all thoughts and centering your concentration on yourself alone.
  • Move your concentration to your shoulders and the back of your neck. Mentally ease any tension you feel there, and ease your shoulders and back into the softness of your bed. Become aware of the comfort of your bed, of your shoulders and back completely relaxed.
  • Move your concentration to your arms, your abdomen, your buttocks, your thighs, your calves and finally your feet and your toes.
  • As you move your concentration to different parts of your body, imagine your body slowly melting into and becoming one with the bed, and the bed becoming one with the elements and with the Universe and it's energy.
This imagining will lead you to experience ultimate comfort and this in turn will let you drift into a deep sleep. Quite often even before you finish.


Getting to sleep is no easy task for many people. Essential oils have been praised for generations for their sleep inducing abilities. Essential oils can be used to help induce sleep in a number of ways. Relaxing for 15 minutes in a warm bath containing oils will have you drifting off in no time.

Massage essential oils into the soles of your feet, your skin, and your hands or inhale essential oils in an Aroma burner. Adding a few drops on your pillow at night will send you into slumber. Oils which have the power to put you to sleep are Lavender, Bergamot, Sandalwood, Frankincense, Geranium, Rose, Roman Chamomile.

Insomnia or sleep disturbances can be caused by vitiation of "vata" or "Pitta" dosha. Below are few herbs which are known to have very positive impact on improving quality of sleep by balancing these doshas.

Ashwagandha - with ania somnifera | Tagara- Valeriana officinalis

As far as diet is concerned, primary focus should be on avoiding food that can disturb your sleep like heavy or oily food for dinner, late night coffee, alcohol etc. A glass of warm milk before going to bed is considered to be very good in promoting good quality sleep.

Fennel scented Poached prawns with lemon ginger and honey dressing

Prawns - 90 gm
Fresh fennel - 50 gm
Kale lettuce - 15 gm
Rucola lettuce - 15 gm
Lollo rosso - 15 gm
Iceberg - 10 gm
Dried cranberries - 5 gm
Parmesan cheese shavings - 5 gm

Lemon - ½ No.
Ginger - 2 gm
Honey - 5 gm
Extra Virgin olive oil - 10 Ml
Salt - to taste
Freshly ground Black pepper - 2 gm

Method | For Salad
In a pan, boil water with fresh fennel. Poach the prawns in the fennel water. Take a bowl and toss all the crispy greens with light dressing. Add remaining ingredients. Toss well and serve chilled. Garnish with freshly shaved parmesan cheese.
